Injuries

Ouch!
You're probably wondering why we'd list a topic such as injuries when we're trying to educate you about the process of training for and running a marathon. The reason is because you will get injured. It is important for you to know that. And, it is important for you to remember that. Why? Because if you are ready for it, then you won't become too depressed when it happens to you. Now, I'm no doctor, but I look at it like this -- injuries are your body's response to overuse. If you go at this too fast, your body will let you know it. And, by setting a goal as daunting as running a marathon, you'll probably overdo it at some point. So, here are some of the most common injuries, and the basics on how to treat them:
  • Shin Splints -- this is an aching that you get along the inside of your lower leg, and it comes from doing too much, too fast. Ice them after running, and take a few days off. Then, start running slowly again until you are sure they are better.
  • Knee Problems -- there are a bunch of these, including iliotibial band (IT Band) stressors that hurt along the outside of your knee as well as other ailments that ache on other knee areas. Basic recommendation here is to make sure you have good sneakers, and see your doctor immediately. They may recommend that you get custom orthotics for your shoes and/or see a sports therapist.
  • Hip Pains -- again, this is common overuse. Make sure to do your stretching twice a day and see your doctor if the aches don't go away quickly

What To Do When Injured
Basically, treat yourself well, because you deserve it. Ice the areas in question, see your doctor, get a massage or two, and keep to stretching and a healthy diet. Although you'll feel frustrated because you need to take a few days off, you can come back stronger if you let your body rest and heal. In fact, those few days off can help heal areas that haven't even reared their ugly heads yet, so relax, and enjoy a good book!
